The Lord of the Ring: The Two Towers

Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings Extended Editions are coming back to theaters right before they hit Blu-ray.

Distributor Warner Home Video has partnered with NCM Fathom — that company that brings the Met opera and other events to theaters everywhere — to offer the three fantasy films in the Academy Award-winning trilogy on the big screen. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring will be in theaters on June 14, The Two Towers on June 21 and The Return of the King on June 28.

The screenings will be shown in various cities, including Pheonix, Los Angeles, San Diego, Denver, Washington DC, Miami, Atlanta, Chicago, Austin and even Hawaii’s Honolulu. Here’s the full list of venues.

Each screening will start at 7pm local time. Buy tickets here.

The Blu-ray set is a must-have in our book — these beautiful films are what high-definition was made for — but seeing them on the big screen again is always a treat. For example, how great would is it to see these moments larger than life again:

  • when Pippin (Billy Boyd) and Merry (Dominic Monaghan) steal and release Gandalf’s (Ian McKellen) great dragon fireworks
  • when Cate Blanchett’s Galadrial momentarily turns into the scary queen
  • when Gandalf battles the Shadow with the awesome scream of “YOU SHALL NOT PASS!!!”
  • the awesome olyphonts
  • the incredible battle for Helm’s Deep with Viggo Mortensen’s Aragorn kicking butt
  • Sam (Sean Astin) and Frodo (Elijah Wood) being rescued from the lava of Mount Doom
  • and, of course, the creepy but precious Gollum (Andy Serkis).

What are your favorite scenes from The Lord of the Rings trilogy? Do you want to see the films on the big screen again?
