News: HBO’s Boardwalk Empire Arrives in Style on Blu-ray & DVD

Mobile retail "bootleggers" unload a shipment of Boardwalk Empire discs on the mean streets of Chicago.

The publicity team at HBO Home Entertainment continues to dazzle us with their high-profile release of the show Boardwalk Empire: The Complete First Season on Blu-ray and DVD.

In November, 2011, they called our attention to the release of the series on Jan. 10 with  a first-class box of promotional swag that included a glossy 16-page hardcover picture book, a soundtrack CD, a two-disc DVD containing the show’s first episode and assorted press materials and a limited edition 2009 bottle of Boardwalk Empire North Coast Brut sparkling wine!

The fun continues on street date with a fleet of vintage cars in New York, Los Angeles and Chicago “delivering” the first batch of discs to each city and serving as mobile retailers in the form of bootleggers carrying illegal potables. The cars are manned, of course, by boisterous tough guys garbed in period dress to reflect the show’s Prohibition-era Atlantic City setting.

The HBO Store in NYC is converted into a speakeasy for the release of Boardwalk Empire on disc.

Better yet is what HBO did with its own retail store in the lobby of their home office in New York City at the corner of 42nd Street and Sixth Avenue. A quick tour reveals that the store is now dressed to kill (or drink, as it were) as a very cool-looking speakeasy, complete with vintage bottles of booze, glassware and newspapers, wooden floors, and period-style photos featuring members of the cast. Of course, as the store is now an “illicit” speakeasy, the front door is outfitted with a horizontal sliding peephole slat, allowing the costume-clad “bouncers” to check out the clientele before they enter!

It’s great stuff for a great show and the kind of effort that’s appreciated by fans of the wildly popular TV series, not to mention city folk who are looking for a DVD or Blu-ray with a little extra kick!
