Music is the magic that brings two lovers together in Chico & Rita.

Music and passion come together in a burst of color in the 2010 animated musical romance film Chico & Rita.

In late 1940s Cuba, Chico is a young piano player with big dreams and Rita is a beautiful singer with an extraordinary voice. Music and desire unite them as they chase their ambitions and each other from Havana to New York and Hollywood to Paris. But their decades-spanning journey—in the tradition of the Latin ballad, the bolero—also  brings heartache and torment.

Directed by Fernando Trueba (Belle Epoque), Javier Mariscal and Tono Errando, the unrated Spanish/UK co-production grossed some $2.2 million at the international box office. The film received a well-reviewed limited roll-out to U.S. theaters in February, 2012.

Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, the movie has a soundtrack by five-time Grammy-winning Cuban musician and composer Bebo Valdés and features music by jazz greats Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Tito Puente and others, many of whom pop up in animated cameos.

Presented in Spanish with English subtitles, the Chico & Rita discs contain a making-of featurette and an audio commentary by directors Trueba and Mariscal as bonus features.

Chico & Rita receives an early digital release on Aug. 21 through iTunes.
