Marina Abramović: The Artist is Present is a 2012 documentary film on the Belgrade-born, New York-based artist Marina Abramović, the self-described “Grandmother of Performance Art.”

Directed by Matthew Akers , the movie follows Abramović as she prepares for what may be the most important exhibition of her life: a major retrospective of her work at New York’s Museum of Modern Art. Along with mounting recreations of some of her earlier works (with the help of some very naked models), Abramović readies herself for what will be her most ambitious project: During the three-month run of the show, she will sit immobile in a chair in the museum’s atrium, while spectators are invited to take turns sitting opposite her– all day, every day, for three months. The long-duration solo work is aptly entitled “The Artist is Present.”

Marina Abramović: The Artist is Present was released in theaters in the U.S.’s top markets in recent months following its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival and it’s HBO broadcast debut in July, 2012.
