The Idol, a 2015 Palestinian comedy-drama directed by Hany Abu-Assad, tells a fictionalized version of the life of Mohammed Assaf, a wedding singer from a refugee camp in Gaza who went to win 2013’s Arab Idol singing competition.
Gaza. Synonymous to so many with conflict, destruction and despair but to Mohammed Assaf (Tawfeek Barhom), and his sister Nour (Hiba Attalah), Gaza is their home and their playground. It’s where they, along with their best friends Ahmad (Bober Shreim) and Omar (Ahmed Al Rokh), play music, football and dare to dream big. Their band might play on second hand, beaten up instruments but their ambitions are sky-high. For Mohammed and Nour, nothing less than playing the world famous Cairo Opera Hall will do. It might take them a lifetime to get there but, as Mohammed will find out, some dreams are worth living for. Along the way, Mohammed will experience tragedy and loss…and maybe a little joy.
Presented in Arabic with English subtitles, the DVD in ludes a behind-the-scenes featurette as a bonus.
