The Thomas Crown Affair movie scene with Pierce Brosnan and Rene RussoA fun, sexy remake from Die Hard director John McTiernan, The Thomas Crown Affair comes to Blu-ray  in a simple, no frills disc.

The picture might not look like the best showcase for Blu-ray high-defintion quality, but that’s more to do with the cinematography style than the transfer. Pierce Brosnan’s (Dante’s Peak) dark eye lashes are sharp in most scenes, but some scenes, such as those with Faye Dunaway (Network), were shot with a filter so appear softer. And yes, Rene Russo’s (Ransom) boobs are nice and clear in the high-def.

What is definitely worth the Blu-ray price is how Bill Conti’s awesome original soundtrack sounds in DTS-HD. The click clack of the tapping shoes incorporated into his music sounds brilliant.

If you’re not familiar with this heist movie, Brosnan stars as a billionaire adrenaline junkie with a penchant for inaccessible fine art, sexy insurance investigators and games. His usual smoothness is extra silky as Thomas Crown, and Russo does well as Catherine Banning, whose biggest thrill comes from hunting her man, until she gets swept off her feet. Not as front and center as usual is Denis Leary (TV’s Rescue Me), who plays a nice down to Earth yang to Russo and Brosnan’s high-flying ying.

Equally fun are the heist scenes, which show-off some ingenious, tongue-in-cheek ways to knock off a fine arts museum.

Now, as I said, this is a no frills disc, so people who already have The Thomas Crown Affair on DVD, they’re not much of an incentive to upgrade. (Hence the three out of five for our overall rating,)

But, if this movie isn’t in their collection, this could be one to consider, because as well as the Blu-ray, you get the DVD playable on the regular players you probably have dotted around your home.

The only special feature is a commentary with McTiernan, which is worth a listen if you’re a fan of his work.
