New Release: Robin Hood DVD and Blu-ray

Robin Hood movie scene with Russell CroweDirector Ridley Scott’s rendition of the Robin Hood legend came out on DVD and Blu-ray on Sept. 21, 2010, from Universal Studios Home Entertainment. Robin Hood stars Russell Crowe as the titular character and Cate Blanchett as Lady Marion.

The action adventure movie, which grossed $104.8 million in theaters, was released as a three-disc DVD/Blu-ray combo pack, a two-DVD set and a single DVD. All three versions have the theatrical version of the film as well as an unrated director’s cut.

Both the theatrical film and unrated director’s cut were made available for digital download and video-on-demand the same day as the DVD and Blu-ray release.

Set in 13th century England, Robin Hood follows the story of the legendary expert archer. In this version, Robin Longstride is back from serving in King Richard’s army against the French. After the king dies, Robin goes to Nottingham and finds the town suffering under a corrupt sheriff and crippling taxation. Robin falls for Lady Marion, who’s skeptical of the motivations of the rogue warrior until he and a gang with lethal mercenary skills begin to prey on the indulgent upper class to correct the injustices of the sheriff.

The Blu-ray version includes these special features exclusively:

  • “Director’s Notebook” multi-media experience incorporating behind-the-scenes footage and interviews with Scott and his team, launching at moments throughout the film.
  • “The Art of Nottingham” featurette about the designs generated for the film, including video introductions by department heads such as production designer Arthur Max and costume designer Janty Yates
  • BD-Live access
  • My Scenes bookmark feature
  • Pocket Blu app that allows iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, Blackberry, Android, PC and Macintosh to work with a network-connected Blu-ray player to activate features such as:
    • Advanced Remote Control
    • Video Timeline
    • Mobile-To-Go bonus content
    • Virtual Keyboard
  • UHear feature, which skips back a few seconds and turns on the subtitles for the section viewers couldn’t hear

Both the Blu-ray and the two-DVD Special Edition have these special features:

  • deleted scenes with introduction and commentary by editor Pietro Scalia
  • “Rise and Rise Again” three-part making-of featurette
    • “Ballad, Legend & Myth: Pre-Production with filmmakers and actors, including Ridley Scott, producer Brian Grazer and Russell Crowe.
    • “The More the Merrier: Production” with Crowe, Cate Blanchett and Ridley Scott, plus production design, costuming, weaponry and action sequences in the film.
    • “No Quarter Given: Post Production” with Scott, Scalia, sound design, visual effects and Marc Streitenfeld’s score.
