New Release: Waste Land DVD

Waste Land movie sceneBritish documentarian Lucy Walker’s Waste Land, which was nominated for an Academy Award for best documentary, was released on DVD on March 15, 2011, from New Video.

In the film, Walker (Devil’s Playground) films contemporary artist Vik Muniz at the Jardim Gramacho, the world’s largest landfill. On the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, the Jardim Gramacho is filled with catadores, who pick through the garbage for recyclable materials while quoting Machiavelli. Muniz’s goal is to take pictures of the garbage pickers, sell the artwork and give the money to the people.

Already a winner at multiple film festivals, Waste Land received a token theatrical release on a few screens, but this DVD has the movie’s biggest audience.

The DVD, which was priced at $29.95, includes the featurette “Beyond Gramacho: An Untold Story.”
