Looks like Blu-ray is continuing to catch on. Redbox is planning to increase the amount of Blu-ray titles the kiosks hold by 10%, according to DVDTown.com.
Scott Di Valerio, CFO of Redbox parent Coinstar, said at the Wedbush 2011 Technology, Media & Telecommunications Conference yesterday that the company is enthusiastic about Blu-ray in kiosks and taking steps to better determine which high-definition releases are most wanted by consumers. According to DVDTown, Valerio said that’s typically action films.
The Blu-ray discs will continue to be priced at $1.50 for a daily rental.
Redbox plans to install between 5,000 and 6,000 new kiosks this year. By the end of 2010, the company had 30,000 kiosks in 26,000 retail locations, according to DVDTown.
The kiosk company also is reportedly joining that every-growing market of streaming content, and said it plans to launch a movie streaming service with a third-party partner this year. Netflix? Blockbuster? Amazon? Could be…
Of course, now Facebook is trying to muscle in on that coin too, with Warner Bros. testing streaming movies through Facebook by offering The Dark Knight for a $3 rental.
Meanwhile, Groupon is offering a five rentals for $2 coupon for Blockbuster Express kiosks (saving of $3) valid through May 1, but for DVD rentals only — not Blu-ray.
