New Release: The Makioka Sisters Blu-ray and DVD

The Makioka Sisters movie scene

The Makioka Sisters comes to vivid life in Criterion's new edition.

The Criterion Collection continued its love affair with the great filmmakers of Japan with the release of Kon Ichikawa’s The Makioka Sisters on Blu-ray and DVD on June 14, 2011.

A lyrical adaptation of the beloved Japanese novel by Junichiro Tanizak, The Makioka Sisters was a late-career triumph for Ichikawa, who’s best known for his films The Burmese Harp (1956), Fires on the Plain (1959) and the 1965 documentary Tokyo Olympiad.

Revolving around the changing of the seasons, The Makioka Sisters (Sasame-yuki) follows the lives of four sisters who have taken on their family’s kimono manufacturing business, over the course of a number of years leading up to the Pacific War. The two oldest have been married for some time, but according to tradition, the rebellious youngest sister cannot wed until the third, conservative and terribly shy, finds a husband. A graceful study of a family at a turning point in history, the acclaimed movie is a poignant evocation of changing times and fading customs, shot in rich, vivid colors.

Criterion’s new edition features a new high-definition digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray edition and new and improved English subtitle translations. There are no bonus features save for a booklet featuring an essay by film scholar Audie Bock.

The Blu-ray and DVD carry the list prices of $29.95 and $19.95, respectively.
