News: Buy a DVD/Blu-ray, see Soul Surfer in theaters

Soul SurferJust like it did with Battle: Los Angeles, Sony Pictures is offering movie cash for its upcoming film Soul Surfer with the purchase of certain DVD and Blu-ray discs through Amazon.

PG-rated Soul Surfer tells the true story of surfer girl Bethany Hamilton, played by AnnaSohpia Robb (Race to Witch Mountain), who lost her arm in a shark attack but found the courage to start surfing again. Dennis Quaid (Legion) portrays Bethany’s father and Helen Hunt (Every Day) her mother. The movie also stars Jeremy Sumpter (TV’s Friday Night Lights), Craig T. Nelson (TV’s Parenthood) singer Carrie Underwood in her film debut.

Judging by the trailer (see below), it looks like a fun, inspirational movie in the vein of The Rookie and Invincible.

Amazon has a special page listing 56 movies on DVD and Blu-ray that are part of the Soul Surfer promotion. Consumers who purchase a disc between now and April 25 will get a code that they can redeem for $10 e-Movie cash toward a ticket to see Soul Surfer or $5 e-Concession reward. Both can be used at participating theaters between April 25 and June 30.

Among the DVD and Blu-ray titles offered are:

  • animated movies Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, Surf’s Up and Swan Princess
  • family films The Water Horse, Hachi: A Dog’s Tale and Fly Away Home
  • drama movies Julie & Julia, The Pursuit of Happyness and A River Runs Through It
  • and sports films A League of Their Own, The Natural and Rudy.
