New Release: The Frighteners Blu-ray

Michael J. Fox gets his ghost in The Frighteners.

Universal Studios Home Entertainment released the Peter Jackson (The Lord of the Rings trilogy) comedy-horror movie The Frighteners on Blu-ray on Sept. 13, 2011, marking the 1996’s film’s Blu-ray debut.

Both the original theatrical film and Peter Jackson’s director’s cut of the movie are included in the high-definition edition, which is priced at $26.98.

In the movie, Michael J. Fox (Back to the Future) stars as small-town ghostbuster Frank Bannister, who’s actually more of a con artist then a paranormal medium because he’s in cahoots with the very spirits he’s supposed to be exorcising. It’s a pleasant-enough life until a powerful, otherworldly force goes on a murderous rampage, forcing Frank to find put aside the usual cons and find a way to stop the evil ghoul before it’s too late.

Co-written by Jackson and LOTR co-writer Fran Walsh, the film also stars John Astin (TV’s The Addams Family), Jeffrey Combs (Re-Animator) and Trini Alvarado (All Good Things).

Filled with the kind of off-kilter wit and clever special effects we’ve come to associate with Jackson’s films, The Frighteners will hopefully look and sound sterling in its Blu-ray incarnation.

The Blu-ray is outfitted with the bonus features that have appeared on earlier digital editions of the film. Here’s the list:
