The Debt movie scene

Helen Mirren makes a life-altering decision in The Debt.

Helen Mirren (Red) portrays a retired Israeli agent who must return to the field to finish up a job she started decades earlier in the espionage action-thriller movie The Debt.

The film’s story opens in 1997, when shocking news reaches former Israeli agents Rachel (Mirren) and Stephan (Tom Wilkinson, TV’s The Kennedys) regarding their former colleague David (Ciarán Hinds, The Eclipse) and their work on a secret mission back in the 1960s. Their decades-old assignment involved tracking down a Nazi war criminal (Jesper Christensen, Casino Royale) in East Berlin and meting out justice. At great risk and considerable personal cost, the team’s mission was accomplished – or was it?

The Debt also stars Jessica Chastain (The Tree of Life), Sam Worthington (Avatar) and Marton Csokas (The Bourne Supremacy) who portray the roles of Rachel, David and Stephan, respectively, when they set out on the dangerous mission in their younger days.

An English-language remake (or re-imagining?) of the 2007 Israeli movie of the same name, The Debt is directed by John Madden (Shakespeare in Love).

A handsome-looking, suspenseful thriller that also throws some interesting politics and a romantic angle into the mix, the R-rated The Debt opened wide in U.S. theaters in August 2011. It grossed a solid $30 million at the box office.

The Blu-ray disc of The Debt contains all of Universal’s branded Blu-ray functions (BD Live elements, a pocket BLU app and so on), while both the DVD and Blu-ray contain the following bonus features:

  • Feature commentary with director John Madden and producer Kris Thykier
  • A Look Inside The Debt
  • Every Secret Has A Price: Helen Mirren in The Debt
  • The Berlin Affair: The Triangle at the Center of The Debt
