A Heavenly Vintage movie scene

An angelic Gaspard Ulliel is all about the wine in A Heavenly Vintage.

The 2009 fantastical period movie A Heavenly Vintage is based on Elizabeth Knox’s 2000 novel The Vintner’s Luck, which juggles a story involving a 19th century peasant, wine, lovemaking and divine guidance.

Jeremie Renier plays Sobran, a young winemaker who rises to prominence through the unlikely guidance of a mysterious angel. His talents make him the object of desire of a beautiful but chilly baroness (Vera Farmiga, Higher Ground) who tempts him to stray from his loving wife (Keisha Castle-Hughes, The Nativity Story) and children. As time goes by, good wines come and go as the heavenly wine overlord continues his work on the fruit of the vine. Sobran, meanwhile, finds himself attracted to both women and in a situation where he must assess what’s most important in his life.

Written and directed by New Zealand’s Niki Caro, (Whale Rider), A Heavenly Vintage didn’t score too well with the critics when it was released in a limited run to U.S. theaters in May 2011.

Still, the movie is a good-looking drama-romance-fantasy-mash-up with special effects performed by the aerial choreographic team for Cirque du Soleil.
