The Lucky OneNicholas Sparks is fast becoming one of the most-adapted of modern novelists, and The Lucky One, starring Zac Efron (New Year’s Eve), is another film based on Sparks’ books. Sparks, you might remember, also wrote the novels that spawned The Notebook, Nights in Rodanthe, Dear John and others.

In The Lucky One, Sparks’ signature romantic drama abounds. The story follows Logan, a Marine who, while stationed in Iraq, found a photograph of a woman with the words “Keep Safe” written on the back. After Logan survives an attack, he credits the photo as his lucky charm. When he returns home, he travels to Louisiana to search for the woman in the photo to tell her how she saved him, but there are complications.

Rated PG-13, the film also stars Taylor Schilling (TV’s Mercy), Blythe Danner (Little Fockers) and Adam LeFevre (The Bounty Hunter). Scott Hicks (The Boys Are Back) directed the movie, with a screenplay written by Will Fetters (Remember Me).

The Lucky One grossed a tidy $60 million in U.S. theaters, loved much more by moviegoers than critics. According to Rotten Tomatoes, The Lucky One got 69% approval from audiences but only 20% from critics. Newark Star-Ledger‘s Stephen Whitty said, “There’s not much to the movie besides handsome sets, sun-dappled photography and a plot as predicatable as the verse in a Hallmark card.” Ouch!

The high-definition version of the movie is a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack and includes these special features:

  • featurette “Zac Efron Becomes a Marine”
  • featurette “Watch the Sparks Fly”
  • featurette “The Romantic World of The Lucky One
  • featurette “Zac and Taylor’s Amazing Chemistry”
  • instant streaming with UltraViolet, which must be redeemed by Aug. 28, 2014.
