Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog DaysWimpy Greg Heffley (Zachary Gordon, The Brothers Bloom) is back for more mayhem in the third movie in the series, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days.

Based on the popular children’s books by Jeff Finney, the Diary of a Wimpy Kid comedy films follow the exploits of Greg, his older brother Rodrick (Devon Bostick, A Dark Truth) and their friends, who are always getting themselves in trouble.

In Dog Days, Greg’s dad (Steve Zahn, TV’s Treme) threatens to send him to military school if he doesn’t stay out of trouble, but he just keeps getting in the doghouse. Greg gets over his head when he pretends to work at the country club where his friend Rowley Jefferson’s (Robert Capron, The Three Stooges) family has a membership. Things go from bad to worse during a father-son camping trip with the Wilderness Explorers. Plus the new family dog, Sweetie, fetches even more trouble for Greg.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days grossed $48 million when it was in theaters, less than the earlier films in the franchise. And critics and moviegoers gave the movie mixed reviews, saying it’s fun and has some laughs, but unoriginal and lowbrow.

Although the film is aimed squarely at kids, the special features on the DVD and Blu-ray/DVD Combo aren’t. The animated short “Class Clown” and maybe the gag reel are fodder for the younger set, but the other extras on the DVD and Blu-ray — commentary with director David Bowers (Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules) and deleted scenes with optional commentary by Bowers — won’t be so interesting to them.

The Blu-ray also has the “FX Movie Channel Presents Wimpy Empire” featurette, and a DVD Prank Pack Exclusive adds Toys to Fool Your Friends, including moldy cheese, bug in a cube and dog poo.
