Dexter Season 7Our favorite TV serial killer gets closer to being exposed in Dexter: The Seventh Season, and it starts to feel like we’ve been here before.

Showtime’s crime show, which is based on the novels by Jeff Lindsay, stars Michael C. Hall (Gamer) as Dexter, a forensics expert who likes blood on the job and off.

Season 6 ended with a heart-stopping cliffhanger when Dexter’s sister Debra (Jennifer Carpenter, Gone) walked in on him in the act. The first episode of season 7 keeps the tension high. Will Debra turn in her brother? Will she help him? And what about the evidence they accidentally left behind, which gets into the hands of Lt. Maria LaGuerta (Lauren Velez, TV’s Ugly Betty)?

The proceedings are fast-paced and tense, but as the episodes move on, the action starts to get familiar. [SPOILER ALERT] Debra tries to rehabilitate her brother, and while that’s new, Dexter trying to resist his bloody urges isn’t. And LaGuerta finding the evidence re-opens a story line that was closed seasons ago.

The acting is still strong all around, and it’s nice to see Chuck‘s Yvonne Strahovski again (although, I still miss Chuck). But it seems like the Dexter‘s writers are struggling to find new directions for our intrepid characters.

Not that season 7 isn’t still entertaining. The new dynamic between Dexter and Debra provides for some interesting moments, and there’s still plenty of intrigue, death and blood to enjoy. But it’s lacking a bit compared to older seasons.

All the episodes look and sound brilliant in Blu-ray high-definition, though.

But don’t look for any special features on the three-disc set. Unlike earlier seasons, like the interviews on season 5, Dexter: The Seventh Season has only the 12 episodes, which is a shame. Maybe they really are running out of things to say.
