Mud movie scene

Matthew McConaughey is a mystery man in Mud.

Matthew McConaughey (Bernie) stars as the title character in the 2012 drama-adventure film Mud.

Mud tells the tale of two boys, Ellis (Tye Sheridan, The Tree of Life) and his best friend Neckbone (newcomer Jacob Lofland), who find a mysterious man named Mud (McConaughey) hiding out on a deserted island in the Mississippi. Mud tells the boys fantastic stories about his life, including how he once killed a man in Texas and now vengeful bounty hunters are after him. He says he is planning to meet and escape with the love of his life, Juniper (Reese Witherspoon, Water for Elephants), who is waiting for him in town. Skeptical but intrigued, Ellis and Neckbone agree to help him. But it isn’t long until Mud’s tall-tales come to life and their small town is besieged by bounty hunters out for blood.

Written and directed by Jeff Nichols (Take Shelter), Mud also features Sam Shepard (Blackthorn), Michael Shannon (The Runaways), Ray McKinnon (TV’s Sons of Anarchy) and Sarah Paulson (Martha Marcy May Marlene).

Nominated for the Palme d’Or at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival, the PG-13-rated movie received a release to nearly 1000 screens in U.S. theaters in April, 2013. It garnered positive notices from the critics (many of whom singled out McConaughey’s performance) and rang up $18.5 million at the domestic box office.
