Oscar nominee A Single Man arrived on DVD and Blu-ray on July 6, 2010, from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.
Based on the novel by Christopher Isherwood, the drama film stars Colin Firth (nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor) and Julianne Moore (The Big Lebowski).
The movie is set in Los Angeles in 1962, at the height of the Cuban missile crisis. A Single Man tells the story of a single day in the life of George Falconer (Firth), a British college professor who is struggling to find meaning in his life after the death of his long time partner, Jim ( Matthew Goode, Leap Year). George is consoled by his friend Charley (Moore), who is wrestling with her own questions about the future. Meanwhile, one of George’s young students, Kenny (Clash of the Titans‘ Nicholas Hoult) stalks George as he feels in him a kindred spirit.
The movie had a limited run in theaters and grossed $9 million. Variety called the film “luminous and treasurable.”
The DVD and Blu-ray include a commentary writer/director Tom Ford (his writer/directorial debut) and a making-of featurette. And the Blu-ray has Sony’s MovieIQ BD-Live feature, a movie trivia database that’s accessible while the movie plays.
The DVD was priced at $27.96 and Blu-ray at $34.95.
