New Release: Devil DVD and Blu-ray

Devil movie sceneHorror movie Devil, from a story by filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense), arrived on DVD and Blu-ray on Dec. 21, 2010, in time for Christmas gifts for those who like some scares under their tree.

In the film, which only received a PG-13 rating, a group of people trapped in an elevator high above Philadelphia realize the devil is among them and no one can escape their fate. The cast includes no name actors but such familiar faces as Chris Messina (Julie & Julia), Logan Marshall-Green (TV’s Dark Blue), Jenny O’Hara (TV’s Big Love) and Bokeem Woodbine (TV’s Saving Grace).

Shyamalan might be known for the movies he has written and directed, such as The Sixth Sense, Signs and Unbreakable, but for Devil, the filmmaker did neither. Instead, the thriller was directed by John Erick Dowdle (Quarantine) and written by Brian Nelson (30 Days of Night). As well as coming up with the story for Devil, Shyamalan produced.

The film grossed $33 million in theaters and was made for a reported $10 million budget.

On DVD, Universal Studios Home Entertainment included three featurettes:

  • “The Story”
  • “The Devil’s Meeting”
  • and “The Night Chronicles.”

The Blu-ray has those, plus:

  • downloadable digital copy of the film
  • My Scenes bookmarking feature
  • and Pocket Blu app, which allows users to control their Blu-ray player with their smartphone.
