New Release: Tron Legacy DVD, Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D

Tron: Legacy movie sceneAfter a stellar showing in theaters, science-fiction movie Tron: Legacy arrived on DVD and Blu-ray in lots of variations on April 5, 2011.

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment used Tron: Legacy to encourage people to upgrade to Blu-ray 3D, offering three versions in that format alone. Earlier, Disney had promised to release both Tron: Legacy and Tangled on Blu-ray 3D the same day the movies come to regular Blu-ray and DVD. Tangled was released on Blu-ray, DVD and Blu-ray 3D on March 29, 2011.

Tron: Legacy was released on disc in three Blu-ray 3D versions:

  • a four-disc combo pack with Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray/DVD and a downloadable digital copy, priced at $49.99
  • a five-disc combo pack with Tron: Legacy Blu-ray 3D/Blu-ray/DVD/downloadable digital copy and Tron: The Original Classic Special Edition Blu-ray, priced at $79.99
  • and Tron: Legacy Limited Edition, the five-disc set in special packaging and a collectible identity disc, priced at $99.99.

The film also was released on DVD ($29.99) and in a two-disc Blu-ray/DVD combo ($39.99) with no 3D.

The DVD includes these special features:

  • “First Look at Tron: Uprising,” the Disney XD animated series
  • “Visualizing Tron” about how the filmmakers brought to life the world inside the Grid
  • “Installing the cast” in which the stars talk about their experience in making the movie

All the Blu-ray versions have those extras plus these:

  • “The Next Day: Flynn Lives Revealed” interactive bonus piece about what happens immediately following the end of the movie
  • Tron: Disney Second Screen,” which syncs up the movie to an iPad or computer, watch the movie for more exclusive interactive elements
  • “Launching the Legacy” about how the writers and filmmakers created the fiction in the film
  • “Disc Roars” with director Joseph Kosinski using the raucous crowd at Comic-Con to record actual ADR for the disc game stadium crowd
  • music video “Derezzed” written, produced, and performed by Daft Punk

Tron: Legacy also is available on video-on-demand with these special features:

  • “Speed of Light”
  • “Disc Roars” with director Joseph Kosinski using the raucous crowd at Comic-Con to record actual ADR for the disc game stadium crowd
  • “First Look at Tron: Uprising,” the Disney XD animated series

The Tron: The Original Classic Special Edition Blu-ray, the high-definition debut of the original Tron movie, also was released separately as a two-disc Blu-ray/DVD combo pack priced at $39.99. Previously, the movie was available in a 20th Anniversary Collector’s Edition.

The original Tron also was released in a two-DVD set ($29.99) with these special features:

  • “The Tron Phenomenon”
  • commentary
  • “The Making of Tron
  • “Development”
  • “Digital Imagery”
  • “Music”
  • “Publicity”
  • deleted scenes
  • “Design”
  • “Storyboarding”
  • and galleries.

The Blu-ray/DVD combo pack includes all these plus a “Photo Tronology.”

And, the original Tron is available on video-on-demand with these special features”

  • “Computers Are People Too”
  • “Digital Imagery of Tron
  • and “Beyond Tron.”

Starring Jeff Bridges (Crazy Heart), Garrett Hedlund (Country Strong) and Olivia Wilde (The Next Three Days), Tron: Legacy grossed $163.2 million in theaters.

The PG-rated film continues the story from the original movie about computer programmer Sam Flynn’s (Bridges) discovery of a world inside computers. In Legacy, Flynn has been missing for years and his 27-year-old son (Hedlund) finds himself pulled into the same world and having to battle fierce programs and gladiatorial games to save himself, his father and the real world.
