New Release: The Illusionist Blu-ray/DVD

The Illusionist movie sceneOscar-nominated animated film The Illusionist was released for home viewing by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment on May 10, 2011. The movie is available only as a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack — no single DVD.

The no separate DVD strategy is one Sony has used on a number of its smaller films, including Barney’s Version and Another Year. Lionsgate did the same thing when it released Ryan Reynolds-starrer Buried in January.

The downside for consumers is that the Blu-ray/DVD release comes with the heftier price tag for those fans who haven’t yet upgraded to the high-definition format. The French film carries a list price of $38.96.

That said, The Illusionist is a beautiful film (watch the trailer below), so it’s worthy of high-definition viewing.

Created in gorgeous hand-drawn animation, the film tells the story of an aging magician whose life changes when he meets a teenage girl, Alice, who’s just starting her life’s journey.

The French movie by Sylvain Chomet (The Triplets of Belleville) and produced by Bob Last, has a screenplay that was originally written by Jacques Tati (Mon Oncle, Mr. Hulot’s Holiday), but he died before the film was made.

Rated PG, the animated film was released in limited theaters in the U.S., so its DVD premiere was its biggest introduction to an audience.

The Blu-ray/DVD combo contains these special features:

  • “The Making of The Illusionist” featurette
  • “The Animation Process” A rare look at the line tests and progression sequences
    • “Chasing the Rabbit” line test
    • “Window Shopping” line test
    • “Fish and Chips” line test
    • “Morning Routine” line test and completed scene montage
    • Garden Party & Travel before and after animation sequences
    • Steam, Splashes, Smoke and The Flying Scotsman before and after animation sequences
    • Tatischeff before and after animation sequences
