New Release: From Prada to Nada Blu-ray and DVD

From Prada to Nada movie scene

The eyes have it in From Prada to Nada.

The movie From Prada to Nada, a Latina reworking of Jane Austen’s classic novel Sense and Sensibility, comes to Blu-ray and DVD from Lionsgate on May 3, 2011. (Clever title! But not as cute as The Devil Wears Nada, which is on late night Cinemax every friggin’ night of the week.)

A fish-out-of-water romantic comedy (who woulda thunk it!?), From Prada to Nada explores the relationship of spoiled Beverly Hills sisters Nora (Camilla Belle, Push) and Mary (Alexa Vega, Broken Hill). When their loving father unexpectedly dies, leaving them penniless, the girls embark on their biggest adventure yet: to live with an estranged aunt on the other side of town — East L.A. — and embrace their long denied heritage… without their designer labels.

The feature film directorial debut of Angel Garcia, From Prada to Nada also stars Wilmer Valderrama (TV’s The Dry Land), Nicholas D’Agosto (Rocket Science) and Kuno Becker (TV’s The Defenders).

The movie received a limited theatrical release in January and has grossed approximately $3 million.

Critics pretty much bashed the film during its brief and limited release in theaters, with Hollywood Reporter‘s Frank Scheck saying, “As modern updates of classic Jane Austen novels go, From Prada to Nada is no Clueless.” But Time Out New York‘s Ben Kenigsberg said, “the actors — especially now-grown Spy Kid Vega — have charm to spare.”

And from the trailer, that does seem to be the case. Sure the movie looks predictable (Vega plays the fun, clueless sister, while Belle is studious and has the glasses to show it). Yes, this is nothing we haven’t seen in plenty of other teen flicks. But the movie also looks like it could be charming and cute — and enjoyable for its target audience of teen and tween Latina girls.

The Blu-ray and DVD carry the list prices of $19.99 and $19.98, respectively. And both have three featurettes, bloopers and deleted scenes.

Here’s the trailer for From Prada to Nada. Let us know what you think…
