MGM Home Entertainment brought two action icons to Blu-ray on Oct. 5, 2010: Mad Max and Robocop.

1987’s Robocop debuted on the high-definition format in 2007, but the new release was the Robocop Trilogy, containing all three movies about the cop turned robot. The set was the first Blu-ray release for Robocop 2 (1990) and Robocop 3 (1993).

Similarly, this was the initial Blu-ray release for 1979’s Mad Max. Released as a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack, Mad Max was priced at $24.99 and the Robocop Trilogy, Blu-ray only, at $59.99.

Starring Peter Weller, science-fiction movie Robocop follows the story of a Detroit police-officer who, after being critically wounded, is rebuilt as half-man, half-cyborg. He’s put back on the force but is haunted by the memories of his former fully human self. In the sequel, Weller’s Robocop is threatened by a corrupt businesswoman who wants to retire the cyborg in favor of her own machine. And in the third movie, Robocop defends innocent citizens from evil real estate developers. Nancy Allen (Blow Out) also stars.

Mad Max Blu-ray boxMel Gibson is the cop fighting the bad guys in the dystopian action movie Mad Max. In a future when a motorcycle gang threatens innocent civilians, Gibson’s Max looks for revenge after his best friend and family are killed.

Although the Robocop Trilogy won’t have any special features, Mad Max is loaded:

On the Blu-ray:

  • filmmaker commentary by Jon Dowding, David Eggby, Chris Murray and Tim Ridge
  • documentary “Mad Max: The Film Phenomenon”
  • and new to the U.S. original Australian audio track,

And on the DVD, which has a new digitally remastered transfer of the movie:

  • documentary “Mel Gibson: Birth of a Star”
  • trivia track
  • and photo gallery.

The DVD also offers the Australian audio track and “Phenomenon” documentary.

MGM’s home entertainment product is distributed by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment.
