The 1958 hard-boiled detective TV show Mike Hammer: The Complete Series, starring Darren McGavin (A Christmas Story), has been much sought-after on DVD, and we’re glad to see the series get its digital day.

Based on the books by legendary crime novelist Mickey Spillane, Mike Hammer was pummeled by critics for its “excessive and gratuitous violence” (by 1950’s standards). But the television series was successful, nonetheless, though it ran for only two seasons.

The 12-disc DVD collection contains all 78 half-hour mystery-filled episodes of the classic show, which feature guest appearances by such familiar TV faces as Angie Dickinson (Police Woman), Marion Ross (Happy Days), DeForest Kelley (Star Trek), Barbara Bain (Space: 1999), Ted Knight (The Mary Tyler Moore Show) and Lorne Greene (Bonanza).

No bonus features are in the set.
