ContagionWith the 2011 drama movie Contagion, director Steven Soderbergh explores what it would be like if a new, highly contagious disease suddenly brakes and how easy it would be for it to destroy humanity.

Featuring many star names, Contagion is an ensemble, documentary-style film in the vein of one of Soderbergh’s most acclaimed film’s Traffic. Contagion‘s cast includes Gwyneth Paltrow (Country Strong), Matt Damon (True Grit), Laurence Fishburne (Boyz N the Hood), Jude Law (Repo Men), Kate Winslet (Heavenly Creatures), Elliott Gould (Ocean’s Thirteen), Marion Cotillard (Midnight in Paris) and Bryan Cranston (Drive).

The PG-13 thriller follows the path of the disease, from the infected people, their family, the doctors and administrators at the Center for Disease Control and even the blogosphere.

The movie is the second partnership between Soderbergh and writer Scott Z. Burns, who also wrote The Informant!.

Contagion grossed a tidy $75 million in theaters and was lauded by critics. New York Magazine‘s David Edelstein called the film “compelling,” and Movie Talk‘s Jason Best said of the film, “Soderbergh keeps a cool head throughout, refraining from the tear-jerking story lines and cheesy emoting you typically get in disaster movies. You might not be groping for tissues, but you’ll definitely be reaching for the anti-viral gel by the close.”

The Blu-ray is a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack with UltraViolet instant streaming digital copy plus these special features:

  • featurette “Contagion: How a Virus Changed the World”
  • featurette “The Reality of Contagion
  • and featurette “The Contagion Detectives.”
