The Muppet Christmas CarolTwenty years after the Muppets took on Charles Dickens‘ classic holiday tale, The Muppet Christmas Carol is available in high-definition Blu-ray.

Released in 1992, the family movie stars Kermit the Frog as Bob Cratchit, Miss Piggy as his wife and Academy Award-winning actor Michael Caine (The Dark Knight Rises) as Scrooge. Of course, the rest of the Muppets are also on board for the ghostly mayhem.

Brian Henson, the son of Muppets creator Jim Henson, directed the G-rated comedy film, his first. He later went on to helm Muppet Treasure Island as well as episodes of TV’s Farscape. The Muppet Christmas Carol was written by the late Jerry Juhl, a long-time Muppet scripter, who also worked on TV’s Fraggle Rock.

The DVD offers these special features:

  • audio commentary with Brian Henson
  • blooper reel
  • Pepe Profiles Presents “Gonzo: A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Weirdo,” a look at the man, the myth, the legend that is the Great Gonzo, hosted by Pepe the King Prawn
  • and featurette “Christmas Around the World,” with Gonzo and Rizzo the Rat taking a look at how the holiday is celebrated around the word.

The Blu-ray offers these new extras:

  • Disney Intermission, a new type of bonus feature in which the movie is paused and fans can watch and “cluck-a-long” to five classic holiday songs performed by the Muppets Chickens and chums
  • new audio commentary with Kermit, Rizzo, Gonzo and other characters talking about their experience making the film
  • featurette “Frogs, Pigs and Humbug: Unwrapping a New Holiday Classic,” a behind-the-scenes look at the movie hosted by Brian Henson, Gonzo and Rizzo
  • and a second disc with a downloadable digital copy of the film.
