Hit and RunAction movie Hit and Run is the second writer/director film by Dax Shepard after 2010’s Brother’s Justice, but this time the Parenthood star added acting to his duties.

Shepard stars as Yul Perrkins, or Charles Bronson as he’s known in the Witness Protection Program. In his previous life, Charles was a getaway driver, and he uses those skills to help get his girlfriend (Kristen Bell, Big Miracle) to Los Angeles for the job opportunity of a lifetime. However, their road trip gets complicated when they’re chased by an inept federal agent (Tom Arnold, Restitution) and Charlie’s ex-friend (Bradley Cooper, Limitless), a vengeance-crazed criminal who Charles helped put in jail.

Beau Bridges (The Descendants), Joy Bryant (Welcome Home, Roscoe Jenkins), David Koechner (Paul) and Jason Bateman (The Switch) also star in the comedy/romance film.

Despite its stars, the R-rated movie got little attention in theaters, grossing only $13.8 million. Maybe the reviews are to blame, as both critics and moviegoers didn’t give Hit and Run much appreciation. Washington Post‘s Stephanie Merry said, “It feels like writer, co-director and star Dax Shepard has unleashed some kind of freakish Franken-film on moviegoers.” Globe and Mail‘s Rick Groen wrote, “Hit and Run is awfully hit and miss.” But famed critic Richard Roeper was more succinct, calling the film, “the worst.”

The Blu-ray and DVD contain these special features:

  • deleted scenes
  • “Street Legal” behind-the-scenes featurette with Shepard and Bell
  • “Run and Gun” explanation of the plot with Shepard and Bell
  • “Love On the Run” with Shepard and Bell discussing the romantic aspects of Hit and Run.

The Blu-ray/DVD Combo pack also has a downloadable digital copy of the movie and instant streaming through UltraViolet.
