Undoubtedly the year’s most talked-about independent film since its premiere at the 2013 Sundance film Festival, Upstream Color is filmmaker Shane Carruth’s follow-up to his 2004 cult favorite Primer.
In this unique drama, a woman (Amy Seimetz, The Dish & the Spoon) is abducted and hypnotized with an organic material harvested from a specific flower. When she falls for a man (Carruth), the two come to realize he may also have been subjected to the same process. They search urgently for a place of safety within each other and struggle to assemble the fragments of their wrecked lives, unknowingly drawn into the life cycle of a presence that permeates the microscopic world, moving to nematodes, plant life, livestock, and back again.
Whew.
Prior to its limited theatrical release which began in early April, the critically acclaimed film had a strong festival run, in addition to Sundance, at the Berlin Film Festival, SXSW and in New York’s New Directors/New Films series.
Written, directed, produced, scored and edited by Carruth (who also co-stars), the PG-13-rated Upstream Color also features Andrew Sensenig (I Love You Phillip Morris) and Thiago Martins.
NO bonus features are on the discs.
