The 1977 biographical film Valentino is directed by Ken Russell (Tommy) and stars Rudolf Nureyev as screen idol Rudolph Valentino (The Sheik).
Very loosely based on the life of Valentino as recounted in the book Valentino, An Intimate Exposé of the Sheik by Chaw Mank and Brad Steiger, the movie drama features stunning cinematography by Peter Suschitzky (Cosmopolis), gorgeous set designs and art direction by Philip Harrison (Mississippi Burning) and beautiful costumes by designer Shirley Russell (Reds). Co-stars include Michelle Phillips, Leslie Caron and Carol Kane (Hester Street).
Though the film has become a cult pick since its critical and commercial failure back in ’77, filmmaker Russel has nonetheless been quoted as saying that the film is the biggest mistake of his career.
