Based on true events, the drama Stonewall from Roland Emmerich (2012) follows the groundbreaking events that led to the birth of the modern Gay Rights movement in 1969 at New York City’s Stonewall Inn.

Stonewall1_optWritten by Jon Robin Baitz, the film tells an incredible narrative through the perspective of Danny Winters (Jeremy Irvine, War Horse), who befriends a group of LGBT youth that ignite a crusade for equality.

In addition to Irvine, the movie’s cast features Jonny Beauchamp (TV’s Penny Dreadful), Joey King (Crazy, Stupid, Love), Caleb Landry Jones (X-Men: First Class) and Matt Craven, with Jonathan Rhys Meyers (Velvet Goldmine) and Ron Perlman (Pacific Rim).

Though its heart appears to have been in the right place, Stonewall hit a stone wall with critics and audiences, garnering a miserable 9% rating at Rotten Tomatoes and less than $200,000 at the domestic box office during its limited run in theaters in September.
