Legendary writer/director Blake Edwards’s (Breakfast at Tiffany’s) brutally funny 1981 satire S.O.B. is the definitive satire on the insanity that is Hollywood.

In the film, a movie producer (Richard Mulligan, Little Big Man) conceives an outrageous plan to rescue his expensive flop by transforming it from a wholesome musical into a soft-core pornographic adventure and persuading his actress-wife (Julie Andrews, The Sound of Music), famous for her wholesome image, to appear topless.

S.O.B. features an outstanding cast of seasoned Hollywood actors, including William Holden (Sunset Boulevard) and three—count’em, three!–great Roberts: Robert Preston (Victor/Victoria), Robert Webber (Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia) and Robert Vaughn (TV’s The Man from U.N.C.L.E.).

The story of S.O.B. parallels the experiences of Edwards and his real-life wife Andrews in their infamous (but Oscar-nominated!) failure 1970 failure Darling Lili, which was intended to reveal Andrews’ heretofore unseen wicked and sexy side.

Critical opinion of the film was sharply divided upon its release. In a remarkable contradiction, the screenplay was nominated both for a Writers Guild of America Award for Best Comedy Written Directly for the Screen and a Razzie Award for Worst Screenplay. It was also nominated for a Razzie for Worst Director and a Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Comedy/Musical.

Today, S.O.B. currently holds a 90% rating at Rotten Tomatoes…!
