Cold Turkey, writer-director-producer Norman Lear’s (TV’s All in the Family) satirical 1971 comedy, stars Dick Van Dyke (Mary Poppins), Bob Newhart (Elf), Edward Everett Horton (Brazil) and Jean Stapleton (TV’s All in the Family).

The film kicks off when the Valiant Tobacco Company makes the following offer: : any city or town in America that can give up smoking for 30 days will receive a $25 million dollar check. Based on the addictive nature of the nation, Valiant is positive that their publicity stunt won’t cost them a dime…! Van Dyke stars as Reverend Clayton Brooks, the minister in the small town of Eagle Rock, Iowa who takes up the challenge as presented by ad exec Merwin Wren, portrayed by Newhart.

Based on the unpublished novel I’m Giving Them Up for Good by Margaret and Neil Rau, the PG-13-rated Cold Turkey was made in 1969, but was shelved for two years by the distributor due to concerns about its box-office potential.

Olive Films’ release represents the film’s Blu-ray debut.
