Marion Cotillard (Two Days, One Night), Mathieu Amalric (Venus in Fur) and Charlotte Gainsbourg (The City of Your Final Destination) star in the emotionally charged 2017 French drama Ismael’s Ghosts from filmmaker Arnaud Desplechin.

Marion Cotillard and Charlotte Gainsbourg in Ismael’s Ghosts.

Twenty-one years after she abandoned her husband, Carlotta (Cotillard) has returned from the void to pick up the pieces of her former life with Ismael (Amalric). But he has been busy rebuilding a life for himself with Sylvia (Gainsbourg) and working on his next feature film. As Ismael’s trials and tribulations unfurl, so too do those of his film’s protagonist: the idle, funny and reckless diplomat Ivan Dédalus (Louis Garrel, Making Plans for Lena).

The character of Ivan is a nod to the ghost of another of Desplechin’s creations, the brother of Paul Dédalus, three-time hero of My Sex Life… or How I Got Into an Argument, A Christmas Tale and My Golden Days. A film within a film, Desplechin layers two narratives upon each other, Desplechin returns once more to the past as a way to find light in the darkest of places.

Ismael’s Ghosts received a limited theatrical rollout in the U.S. in March, 2018.
