You’ve undoubtedly made your own assessment of Francis Coppola’s The Godfather, Part III, the third entry in the filmmaker’s venerable Godfather series. (It’s not even in the same league as the first one, the last third is soooo slow, you’ve got to be kidding with Sophia Coppola, and so on….). Well, as you’ve probably heard, the 1996 film has been retooled, remixed and re-edited by Coppola to reflect he and writer Mario Puzo’s original vision of the film and is coming Blu-ray and Digital last week as Mario Puzo’s The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone. Leading the changes is a new opening to the film (and a tweaked ending, as well).
I can’t speak for the new edit yet, but my opinion of the original jibes with that of fictional gangsta rapper Massive Genius as he describes it in a Season One entry of The Sopranos (he’s played by Bokeem Woodbine): “Godfather II was definitely the shit. The third one…a lot of people didn’t like it. But I think it was just…misunderstood.
Next week, you can form your own opinion!
