RATINGS (out of 5 dishes):

Gregg Araki’s first feature in 12 years feels less like a comeback than a gleeful reminder that he never really left the party. The filmmaker who emerged from the New Queer Cinema movement with cult favorites like The Living End, Totally F*ed Up and The Doom Generation has always had an eye for sex, alienation, bad behavior and the peculiar absurdities of Los Angeles. But I Want Your Sex may be his most broadly inviting film yet: a glossy, naughty, very funny sex comedy with one hand on the modern art world and the other firmly on the audience’s thigh.

Cooper Hoffman (Licorice Pizza) plays Elliot, a young man who falls into the orbit of Erika Tracy, a wildly successful, preposterously fashionable contemporary artist played by Olivia Wilde (Drinking Buddies), and quickly discovers that employment under Erika can become personal in every sense of the word. What follows is a delirious tangle of desire, power, jealousy, role-playing and bad decisions, all served up with Araki’s familiar appetite for excess.

Wilde is the showstopper, looking both ravishing and ridiculous in a parade of flamboyant outfits and playing Erika with complete comic authority. She’s also having a pretty terrific 2026, between this performance and The Invite, the well-received film she directed as well. Hoffman is equally game, and his willingness to throw himself into the movie’s increasingly intimate situations gives the whole thing its buoyancy. Chase Sui Wonders and Mason Gooding add able comic support, but not so much pop star Charlie XCX, who’s doesn’t appear wholly at ease as Hoffman’s equally ill at ease girlfriend.

Best of all, I Want Your Sex never feels like it’s trying too hard to shock. It’s playful, knowingly trashy, visually alive and genuinely funny. Araki’s still having fun — and so are we.
