The 1990 road movie crime-comedy romance Wild at Heart by David Lynch (Blue Velvet) makes its Criterion 4K UHD and Blu-ray debut this month.

Adapted from the picaresque novel by Barry Gifford, the flick stars Nicolas Cage (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice) and Laura Dern (The Master) as Sailor and Lula, a pair of star-crossed lovers pursued across the American landscape by all manner of horrors. Most are unleashed by Lula’s unhinged mother (Diane Ladd, Jake’s Corner), a woman scorned who will stop at nothing to destroy Sailor. Also starring Harry Dean Stanton (Repo Man), Isabella Rossellini (Blue Velvet), and Willem Dafoe (Antichrist), the film features a memorably a haunting score by Angelo Badalamenti and Cage memorably lip-synching the Elvis Presley classic “Love Me.”

The two-disc Blu-ray and 4K UHD editions feature the following:

  • New 4K digital restoration of the unrated international version, supervised by director of photography Frederick Elmes and approved by the David Lynch Estate, with 2.0 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack
  • Alternate 5.1 surround mix newly created from the original 35 mm DME magnetic tracks by rerecording mixer Dean Hurley
  • New introduction by film programmer and critic Dennis Lim
  • Archival documentaries featuring interviews with members of the cast and crew
  • Deleted scenes and outtakes, with a new 5.1 surround mix by Hurley
  • Readings from Room to Dream, a 2018 book coauthored by Lynch and critic Kristine McKenna
  • Segments from a 1988 episode of Cinéma, de notre temps featuring Lynch
