New Release: Micmacs Blu-ray and DVD

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment released the fantastical foreign-language comedy Micmacs, on Blu-ray and DVD on Dec. 14, 2010, for the suggested retail price of $38.96 and $28.95, respectively.

Written and directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amélie, Delicatessen), Micmacs stars Dany Boon (The Valet) and André Dussollier (A Very Long Engagement).

Micmacs tells the tale of a man named Bazil (Boon) whose life is forever altered by two bullets — one that exploded in the middle of the Moroccan desert and another that lodged in his brain years later. Bazil doesn’t have much luck with weapons! The first made him an orphan, the second holds him on the brink of sudden, instant death.

Released from the hospital after his accident, Bazil is homeless. Luckily, he is quickly taken in by a motley crew of junkyard dealers living in a veritable Ali Baba’s cave.

Then, one day, walking by two huge buildings, Bazil recognizes the logos of the weapons manufacturers that caused all of his misfortune. He sets out to take revenge, with the help of his faithful gang of wacky friends. Underdogs of battling heartless industrial giants, our gang relive the battle of David and Goliath, with all the imagination and fantasy of silent film master Buster Keaton.

In order to create the colorful world and idiosyncratic characters of Micmacs, Jeunet drew upon a wealth of cinematic inspirations from Toy Story to Sergio Leone spaghetti westerns to his own films. In fact, Jeunet says, “Micmacs is a little like Delicatessen meets Amélie …”

For the intriguing soundtrack, the director combined original music from newcomer Raphaël Beau with film noir scores from legendary Hollywood composer Max Steiner.

The Blu-ray and DVD special features include:

  • commentary with Jeunet
  • Q&A with Jeunet and actress Julie Ferrier
  • “The Making of Micmacs” featurette
  • and “Animations: Absurd Deaths” featurette.
