Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment released the movie about the legendary racing horse Secretariat on DVD and Blu-ray on Jan. 25, 2011.
The film Secretariat, which received critical acclaim and Oscar buzz during its run in theaters, stars Diane Lane (The Perfect Storm) as Penny Chenery, owner and advocate of the real Secretariat, who believed her horse would be a champion when others didn’t. John Malkovich (Jonah Hex) plays horse trainer Lucien Laurin, with Dylan Walsh (Nip/Tuck) as Penny’s husband and Scott Glenn (Backdraft) as her ill father.
The inspirational little-horse-that-could story, from the producers of underdog films Miracle, Invincible and The Rookie, grossed $58 million in theaters. It’s based on the book by author William Nack.
Rated PG, Secretariat was priced at $29.99 on DVD and $39.99 for a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack. And the movie was available the same day for download.
The DVD, Blu-ray and download have these special features:
- three deleted scenes with introduction and optional commentary by director Randall Wallace
- music video for AJ Michalka’s “It’s Who You Are”
- and featurette “Heart of a Champion,” about the real-life horse and including interviews with the filmmakers and key players.
The download also comes with the featurette “Choreographing the Races,” about how Wallace and the filmmakers used innovative tools to recreate Secretariat’s Triple Crown races.
The Blu-ray includes all of those plus:
- commentary with Wallace
- four more deleted scenes, including an alternate opening
- “A Director’s Inspiration: A Conversation With the Real Penny Chenery,” with Wallace and Chenery reviewing the movie and talking about what it was like to be a woman in a male-dominated sport
- and Secretariat Multi-Angle Simulation, showing the horse’s 1973 Preakness race from different perspectives with commentaries from fans, announcers and Secretariat’s jockey.
