New Release: Stand By Me 25th Anniversary Blu-ray

Stand By Me movie sceneFilmmaker Rob Reiner’s coming-of-age movie Stand By Me turned 25 in 2011, and Sony Pictures Home Entertainment celebrated with the film’s debut on high-definition Blu-ray on March 22, 2011.

Based on the novella by Stephen King, 1986’s Stand By Me stars Corey Feldman (The Goonies), River Phoenix (Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade), Jerry O’Connell (Piranha) and Wil Wheaton (TV’s Star Trek: The Next Generation) as a group of friends in a small Oregon town who, after the death of a friend, set out on a two-day trek to find the body of a missing boy. Along the way, they sneak smokes, tell tall tales and, when they encounter the town’s knife-wielding hoods, make some self discoveries. Kiefer Sutherland (TV’s 24) and Richard Dreyfuss (TV’s Weeds) also star in the film.

The Stand By Me 25th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray ($24.95) includes new special features including a video reunion with Reiner, Wheaton and Feldman and “25 Years Later,” a video commentary retrospective with the director and two actors. Other special features on the disc are:

  • audio commentary with Reiner
  • featurette “Walking the Tracks: The Summer of Stand By Me
  • and the “Stand By Me” music video.

The R-rated movie, which grossed a tidy $47 million in 1986, was nominated for an Academy Award (best screenplay) and two Golden Globes (best picture—drama and best director).

A new DVD version was not released, but the film is already available on DVD.
