New Release: Papillon Blu-ray Book

Papillon movie scenePapillon, the 1973 prison drama film starring Steve McQueen (Bullitt), arrived on Blu-ray for the first time on May 24, 2011, from Warner Home Video.

Directed by Franklin J. Schaffner (Planet of the Apes) and based on the best-selling book, Papillon is a true story about French ex-convict Henri “Papillon” Charriére, a petty criminal who is unjustly convicted of murder, and his constant struggle to escape to freedom from the brutal French penal system in, among other places, Guiana’s infamous Devil’s Island.

Considered to contain one of McQueen’s best performances (it earned him a Golden Globe Award nomination), the film co-stars Dustin Hoffman (Ishtar) as Charriére’s scruffy, well-moneyed friend Dega.

On Blu-ray, the classic movie is in a collectible 32-page Blu-ray Book, featuring film information, archival photos, trivia and an examination of the controversy surrounding the film.

The sole special feature on the disc is a vintage featurette about McQueen’s career.

The Papillon Blu-ray carries a list price of $34.95.
