Barney Miller scene

New York City's 12th Precinct is abuzz in Barney Miller.

Airing on ABC TV from 1974 through 1982, Barney Miller remains one of television’s liveliest New York-based situation comedies of the 1970s. That said, Barney Miller: The Complete Series has a lot of life pumping through its veins!

The classic show is set in a New York City police station in Greenwich Village, a colorful, bustling place filled with a mix of cops, detectives and administrators of a whole lot of ethnic and racial types (Puerto Ricans, Jews, African-Americans, Asians, Poles, you name it).

Hal Linden stars in the series as the titular Barney Miller. As the precinct’s captain, Barney somehow manages to maintain order over this group of inner-city law enforcers, who are undeniably good at their jobs but are always looking for something else to do. (A little gambling, perhaps? Or maybe a long lunch?)

Co-starring Abe Vigoda, Max Gail, Ron Glass, Jack Soo, James Gregory and Steve Landesberg, the show ran for eight seasons — a whopping 170 episodes — and never really “jumped the shark,” to use a term applied to sitcoms when they hit the wall and/or run out of steam.

Though individual seasons of the series have been available over the years, Shout! Factory’s release represents the first time the complete series has been issued in one set.

Barney Miller: The Complete Series DVD includes the following special features:

  • 32-page commemorative book
  • new interviews with cast members Hal Linden, Max Gail and Abe Vigoda
  • first season of the spin-off show Fish, starring Abe Vigoda
  • original pilot “The Life and Times of Captain Barney Miller”

Though the collection is priced at a hefty $159.99, Amazon is offering it for the seriously discounted price of $98.99. (The Shout! Factory store carries it for that price, as well.)
