Mildred Pierce scene

Kate Winslet (r.) comforts daughter Evan Rachel Wood in Mildred Pierce.

Directed by Todd Haynes (Poison) and based on James M. Cain’s classic 1941 novel of pride and status in the middle class, the television drama Mildred Pierce is a portrait of a proud mother’s battle to earn her daughter’s love — and the immense power the daughter exerts in withholding it.

The latest entry in a line of renowned HBO miniseries, the five-part TV show tells the story of — not surprisingly — Mildred (Kate Winslet, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), a struggling single mother in Depression-era Los Angeles determined to fulfill the demands of her eldest daughter Veda (portrayed by Mercy’s Morgan Turner and The Conspirator’s Evan Rachel Wood), while surpassing societal expectations and the duplicity of the men in her life.

With a talent for baking and a tremendous work ethic, Mildred sets her sights on becoming a restauranteur. Along the way, she finds unexpected romance with Monty Beragon (Guy Pearce, The Road), a charming and wealthy idler, but personal tragedy soon strikes and Mildred faces the ultimate betrayal of love by her gifted but haughty daughter.

Aired on HBO in March 2011, Mildred Pierce was nominated for a staggering 21 Emmy Awards and brought home five of them, including “Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or Movie” for Winslet and “Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or Movie” for Pearce.

Bonus features on the DVD and Blu-ray include:

  • audio commentaries from Haynes, co-writer Jon Raymond and production designer Mark Friedberg
  • a menu-based series index and previews of each of the five parts
  • “Inside the Episode” pieces (Collector’s Edition only)
  • “The Making of Mildred Pierce” featurette (Collector’s Edition only)
