Nominated for two Academy Awards, My Week With Marilyn got plenty of acclaim when it was in theaters but was screened in only a limited release.
The independent film, which grossed $13 million at the box office, stars Michelle Williams (Blue Valentine) as the titular blonde bombshell and Kenneth Branagh (Pirate Radio) as actor Sir Laurence Olivier. Both were nominated for Oscars for their performances.
In the drama movie, Marilyn Monroe makes her first trip to London to film The Prince and the Showgirl with Olivier. There, she befriends Colin Clark (Eddie Redmayne, Glorious 39), the film’s third assistant director, but as their relationship progresses, he begins to focus less on the movie and more on rescuing Marilyn from the pressures of celebrity life.
Julia Ormond (The Music Never Stopped) and Emma Watson (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2) also star in My Week With Marilyn, which is based on the memoir by Colin Clark.
Rated R, the biography film was praised by critics mostly for Williams’ performance. Entertainment Weekly‘s Lisa Schwarzbaum called her “a wonder,” and Sarasota Herald-Tribune‘s Christopher Lloyd said she’s “transformative.”
