Beyond the Steppes movie scene

Agnieszka Grochowzka struggles to survive in Beyond the Steppes.

The 2010 Belgian film drama Beyond the Steppes tells the story of a woman’s forced journey to the steppes of Central Asia.

In the 1940’s during the aftermath of World War II, young Polish woman Nina (Agnieszka Grochowzka) and her baby are deported by the Soviet Army to the remote and inhospitable lands of the USSR’s eastern region. Upon arrival, she’s forced to work in a Sovkhoz labor camp guarded by the Russian military police. When her child becomes ill, she flees and sets out across the barren planes of Siberia with a group of Kazakh nomads, in search of medication for her baby.

Written and directed by first-time feature filmmaker Vanja D’Alcantara, Beyond the Steppes was received positively by critics around the world, winning awards for Best Director at the Tokyo International Film Festival and Best Actress at the Flanders International Film Festival.

The release of Beyond the Steppes on DVD by Vanguard represents the film’s U.S. premiere.

Presented in Russian and Polish with English subtitles, the DVD of the unrated movie contains no bonus features.
