SafeJason Statham (Killer Elite) is in action again in Safe, a movie written and directed by Boaz Yakin (Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time).

In the crime film, Statham plays Luke Wright, a former mixed martial arts cage fighter whose family was murdered after he refused to rig a fight for the Russian Mafia. Filled with guilt, Wright finds new purpose in life when he stumbles on Mei (Catherine Chan in her debut movie), a frightened Chinese girl whose brilliance in math has been extorted by the Triads. She holds the key to a code that could destroy the Triads, the Mob and corrupt NYPD cops. Wright tries to save her, while all three hunt them down.

Rated R, Safe grossed $17 million in wide release in theaters, lower than some of Statham’s other action films, such as 2011’s The Mechanic.

The movie got mixed reviews from critics, but we agree with Newark Star-Ledger‘s Stephen Whitty, who wrote: “Yeah, Safe is a long way from perfect. But rented, … it’ll go great with a six-pack and a hold-the-anchovies special.”

The DVD and Blu-ray contain these special features:

  • audio commentary with Yakin
  • featurette “Cracking Safe
  • featurette “Criminal Battleground”
  • featurette “The Art of Gunfight”
  • and a downloadable digital copy of the movie.
