Producer/director Cecil B. DeMille’s (The Ten Commandments) 1949 classic epic film Samson and Delilah finally makes it’s official DVD debut following years of, er, unofficial editions and poorly transferred imports.
Starring Victor Mature (The Robe) and Hedy Lamarr (My Favorite Spy) in the title roles, Samson and Delilah tells the story of the Bible’s fabled strongman and the woman who seduces and betrays him as it brings to life Samson’s incredible feats, including his battle with a lion, his single-handed assault on a thousand Philistine soldiers, and the spectacular climax in which he pulls down a pagan temple. Still, that Delilah is no slouch either…
Also starring George Sanders (All About Eve) and Angela Lansbury (The Manchurian Candidate), the lavish production earned five Academy Award nominations and won for Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design.
For this DVD release, the original nitrate three-strip Technicolor negatives of the movie were scanned in 4K, and the three strip image was registered, cleaned and color corrected in 4K. In addition, DeMille’s original nitrate print was used in order to complete the original music overture and special effect work was done to clean up original optical images, which is reportedly a particularly tricky three-strip challenge. Also, the original mono audio track was cleaned up and restored.
Sounds like it’s gonna be a gorgeous, candy-colored treat!

No thanks. As much as I adore this film, I think it is highly irresponsible of the studio to release Samson & Delilah in dvd format only in 2013. I will wait for the later blu-ray thankyou.
Maybe the studio isn’t jumping on the BD format because it’s not a widescreen film and they think that only purists go the Blu-ray route. I disagree with them, but maybe that’s how they’re thinking…
