Universal Soldier Day of Reckoning movie scene

Actions speak louder than words in Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning.

Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren, last seen together in 2012’s The Expendables 2,  are back for more high-end violence in the bone-crunching science fiction action-thriller film Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning, a 2012 installment in the Universal Soldier franchise, which continues to kick ass some twenty years after its first installment, 1992’s Universal Soldier.

This time around, two-fisted John (Scott Adkins, The Bourne Ultimatum) wakes up from a coma to discover his wife and daughter have been slaughtered in a brutal home invasion. Haunted by images of the attack, he vows to kill the man responsible, Luc Deveraux (Van Damme). While John tries to piece his reality back together, things get more complicated when he is pursued by a relentless UniSol (UFC fighter Andrei “The Pitbull” Arlovski), a genetically enhanced “Universal Soldier.” As John gets closer to Deveraux and his rogue army of enhanced warriors led by back-from-the-dead leader Andrew Scott (Lundgren), John discovers more about himself and begins to call into question everything he believed to be true.

Directed John Hyams (who helmed the previous chapter in the series, 2009’s Universal Soldier: Regeneration), Day of Reckoning has been praised as one of the year’s finest action films, with the Village Voice declaring that Hyams (son of director Peter Hyams of Capricorn One fame) is a leading candidate for the best action director working today.

Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning premiered as a Video on Demand title in October, 2012, followed by a limited run in U.S. theaters in November, 2012. Though the R-rated movie didn’t make much of a splash at the box office, action aficionados (who undoubtedly saw the film online or in some other kind of unofficial fashion) have been raving non-stop across the Internet.

The Blu-ray and DVD include the following bonus features:

  • Commentary with director John Hyams and Dolph Lundgren
  • Three Behind-The-Scenes featurettes:
    -Coming Into Focus
    -There Is No End
    -Production Wrap
