Anthony Hopkins (Thor), Helen Mirren (The Debt), and Scarlett Johansson (Marvel’s The Avengers) star alongside Danny Huston (The Warrior’s Way), Toni Collette (Velvet Goldmine), Jessica Biel (Total Recall), Michael Stuhlbarg (Men in Black 3) and James D’Arcy (W.E.) in Hitchcock, a 2012 biographical drama about the great filmmaker Alfred, er, you-know-who, and the making of one of his most iconic films, Psycho.
In the movie, the already-legendary Hollywood filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock (Hopkins) is plagued by both a reckless ego and nagging self-doubt when he becomes obsessed with a grisly murder story that the studios won’t back. Determined to make the film, Hitchcock risks his reputation, his home and even the love of his wife Alma (Mirren), as he sets out to make the film. Ultimately, Hitch wins Alma over, and the two collaborate to create one of his masterpieces, Psycho, starring Janet Leigh (Johansson), Anthony Perkins (Darcy), and Vera Miles (Beal).
Directed by Sacha Gervasi (Anvil: The Story of Anvil), the highly anticipated film received a lmited release to U.S. theaters in November, 2012 and has since grossed a rather disappointing $3.1 million despite generally solid reviews. Perhaps the premiere of HBO’s The Girl on HBO, another Hitchcock bio-pic starring Toby Jones (Your Highness) as the man, took a bite out of some prospective business.

Although Hopkins continued in theatre (most notably at the National Theatre as Lambert Le Roux in Pravda by David Hare and Howard Brenton and as Antony in Antony and Cleopatra opposite Judi Dench as well as in the Broadway production of Peter Shaffer’s Equus, directed by John Dexter) he gradually moved away from it to become more established as a television and film actor. `
