Pacific RimIt’s giant dinosaur-like creatures versus giant Transformer-like robots in Pacific Rim.

Guillermo del Toro directs the big science-fiction movie, building on his two bigger-budget films Hellboy and Hellboy II: The Golden Army. Pacific Rim is his biggest movie yet, in visual effects as well as characters.

The movie stars Charlie Hunnam (TV’s Sons of Anarchy) as Raleigh Becket, one of the best pilots of massive robots known as Jaegers. The robots were developed to combat an influx of giant creatures that have been rising from the sea and pummeling humans on land. After his brother and fellow pilot is killed, Raleigh turns away from the Jaeger program.

However, as attacks from the Kaiju monsters get worse, Raleigh is recruited once again by the Jaeger pilot leaders (Idris Elba, Prometheus) and must work with an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi, The Brothers Bloom) to drive a legendary robot for once last chance to stop the apocalypse.

Pacific Rim Blu-ray boxDel Toro staple Ron Perlman (Frankie Go Boom) also stars in the PG-13 movie, which grossed a tidy $100.5 million in theaters. Critics are moviegoers alike praised the film, but critics mostly appreciated the visuals, not the story. Richard Roeper said Pacific Rim is “a ridiculously entertaining (and often just plain ridiculous) monster-robot movie that plays like that Rock ’em Sock ’em Robots game from the 1960s.”

All discs come with special features. On the DVD and both Blu-ray sets are:

  • audio commentary with Del Toro
  • “Drift Space”
  • “The Digital Artistry of Pacific Rim
  • “The Shatterdome”
  • “Focus Points”

  • booper reel
  • and digital copy and instant streaming through UltraViolet.

The Blu-ray/DVD Combo and Blu-ray 3D Combo also carry:

  • “The Director’s Notebook.”
